1. Overview:

PHP is an HTML-embedded scripting language commonly used with the Apache HTTP Server.

It was discovered that the PHP XSL extension did not restrict the file writing capability of libxslt. A remote attacker could use this flaw to create or overwrite an arbitrary file that is writable by the user running PHP, if a PHP script processed untrusted eXtensible Style Sheet Language Transformations (XSLT) content. The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures project (cve.mitre.org) has assigned the name CVE-2012-0057 to this issue.

Note: This update disables file writing by default. A new PHP configuration directive, "xsl.security_prefs", can be used to enable file writing in XSLT.

A flaw was found in the way PHP validated file names in file upload requests. A remote attacker could possibly use this flaw to bypass the sanitization of the uploaded file names, and cause a PHP script to store the uploaded file in an unexpected directory, by using a directory traversal attack. The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures project (cve.mitre.org) has assigned the name CVE-2012-1172 to this issue.

It was discovered that the fix for CVE-2012-1823, released via RHSA-2012:0546, did not properly filter all php-cgi command line arguments. A specially-crafted request to a PHP script could cause the PHP interpreter to output usage information that triggers an Internal Server Error. The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures project (cve.mitre.org) has assigned the name CVE-2012-2336 to this issue.

A memory leak flaw was found in the PHP strtotime() function call. A remote attacker could possibly use this flaw to cause excessive memory consumption by triggering many strtotime() function calls. The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures project (cve.mitre.org) has assigned the name CVE-2012-0789 to this issue.

It was found that PHP did not check the zend_strndup() function's return value in certain cases. A remote attacker could possibly use this flaw to crash a PHP application. The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures project (cve.mitre.org) has assigned the name CVE-2011-4153 to this issue.

Recommended Actions for System Products:
Avaya strongly recommends that customers follow networking and security best practices by implementing firewalls, ACLs, physical security or other appropriate access restrictions. Though Avaya believes such restrictions should always be in place, risk to Avaya products and the surrounding network from this potential vulnerability may be mitigated by ensuring these practices are implemented until such time as an Avaya provided product update or the recommended Avaya action is applied. Further restrictions as deemed necessary based on the customer's security policies may be required during this interim period, but customers should not modify the System Product operating system or application unless the change is approved by Avaya. Making changes that are not approved may void the Avaya product service contract.

The risk is rated None for Session Manager because PHP is not used and the vulnerability cannot be exploited.
The risk is rated Low for other products because no critical system processes or applications would be affected.

3. Avaya Software-Only Products:

Avaya software-only products operate on general-purpose operating systems. Occasionally vulnerabilities may be discovered in the underlying operating system or applications that come with the operating system. These vulnerabilities often do not impact the software-only product directly but may threaten the integrity of the underlying platform.

In the case of this advisory Avaya software-only products are not affected by the vulnerability directly but the underlying Linux platform may be. Customers should determine on which Linux operating system the product was installed and then follow that vendor's guidance.
