Original Release Date: October 15, 2014
Last Revised: March 28, 2017
Number: ASA-2014-378
Risk Level: Low
Advisory Version: 2.0
Advisory Status: Final

1. Overview:

GNU Bash is a popular open source command line shell incorporated into Linux and other widely used operating systems. Vulnerabilities have been discovered that may allow a remote user to execute arbitrary code on systems that are running affected versions of Bash. These vulnerabilities are also known as shellshock. The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures project (cve.mitre.org) has assigned the names CVE-2014-6271, CVE-2014-7169, CVE-2014-7186, CVE-2014-7187, CVE-2014-6277 and CVE-2014-6278 to these issues.

2. Avaya Business Communication Manager Products with affected packages installed:

Product: Affected Version(s): Risk Level: Actions:
Business Communication Manager 50 6.x Low Apply BCM 50 R6 System Smart Update - BCM050.R600.SU.System-022.201412.
Business Communication Manager 450 6.x Low Apply BCM 450 R6 System Smart Update - BCM450.R600.SU.System-022.201412.

Recommended Actions for BCM Products:
Avaya strongly recommends following networking and security best practices by implementing firewalls, ACLs, physical security or other appropriate access restrictions. Though Avaya believes such restrictions should always be in place, risk to Avaya products and the surrounding network from this potential vulnerability may be mitigated by ensuring these practices are implemented until such time as an Avaya provided product update or the recommended Avaya action is applied. Further restrictions as deemed necessary based on the customer's security policies may be required during this interim period, but the Product operating system or application should not be modified unless the change is approved by Avaya. Making changes that are not approved may void the Avaya product service contract.

Mitigating Factors:

When determining risk, Avaya takes into account many factors as outlined by Avaya's Security Vulnerability Classification Policy. The following table describes factors that mitigate the risk of specific vulnerabilities for affected Avaya products:

Vulnerability Mitigating Factors
CVE-2014-6271
CVE-2014-7169
CVE-2014-7186
CVE-2014-7187
These are a Low risk as all shell access is disabled by default.
