OpenSSH security update (RHSA-2006-0697)

Original Release Date: October 10, 2006
Last Revised: September 6, 2007
Number: ASA-2006-216
Risk Level: Medium
Advisory Version: 2.0
Advisory Status: Final

1. Overview:

OpenSSH is a suite of tools for interoperating with the SSH protocol developed for OpenBSD.

Two vulnerabilities have been discovered in OpenSSH. The first has to do with a potential race condition in the signal handler for sshd when GSSAPI authentication is used. A remote attacker could potentially exploit this vulnerability to cause the daemon to crash. The second vulnerability is a bug in SSH-1 (version 1) which could be exploited to cause sshd to consume large amounts of CPU resources, potentially leading to a denial of service on the affected machine. The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures project (cve.mitre.org) has assigned the names CVE-2006-5051 and CVE-2006-4924 to these issues.

A number of Avaya System Products use OpenSSH, and are affected by these vulnerabilities; however, some Avaya System Products which use OpenSSH do not utilize SSH-1 and/or GSSAPI, and are therefore not affected by these issues.

More information about these vulnerabilities can be found in the security advisory issued by RedHat Linux:

Avaya software-only products operate on general-purpose operating systems. Occasionally vulnerabilities may be discovered in the underlying operating system or applications that come with the operating system. These vulnerabilities often do not impact the software-only product directly but may threaten the integrity of the underlying platform.

In the case of this advisory Avaya software-only products are not affected by the vulnerability directly but the underlying Linux platform may be. Customers should determine on which Linux operating system the product was installed and then follow that vendors guidance:
